Welcome to the Storrington & Arun Valley Regional Group (SAVRG) of the Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT). The SWT helps to preserve and manage nature across over 30 nature reserves in Sussex. The SAVRG is a volunteer run group within the SWT working in the whole Arun Valley and surrounding area, chaired by Sarah Abercromby. We welcome any SWT member to join no matter what your location!
On this site you can learn about our events, how to join us, and what we do, including our group projects, guided walks, talks, nature surveys, and community activities.
We welcome anyone who has an interest in nature and who wants to join a community of like-minded people. For our younger members, aged 18-25, we also have a youth group.
To join, please email us at swtstorringtonregion@gmail.com, you must already be a SWT member.
Swifts and house martins are struggling due in part to the lack of nesting sites. Both species are on the BoCC partnership red list of endangered birds. Our well established swift and house martin project is continuing its work by: surveying & monitoring existing nesting locations, installing nest boxes, and raising public awareness of how to help swifts and hirundines.
We are trying to identify bat habitats and species in our local area. We monitor and record bats in different locations to establish what species are present and help to protect their natural habitats which may be under threat.
A very wide project! We're encouraging members to use nature-friendly gardening practices, survey and record species including hazel dormice, take part in tree recording with the Lost Woods project, and liaise with Parish Councils to maintain our public spaces sympathetically for nature.
We support worshippers to manage their churchyards, such as the one at Amberley pictured here, for the benefit of nature. This includes surveys of wildlife, such as reptiles and plants. We also support the bat evenings at St Mary's church, Pulborough. We would love it if your churchyard could join us!
